The Holiday Season is Upon Us, Celebrate Intentionally!

As I prepare for my first holiday party this season, I can’t help but recognize how stressful this time of year can be for many of us and take a toll on our festive spirit. Here are some strategies to help you navigate the season with a little more ease and enjoyment.

1. Set Your Holiday Intentions 📝

Decide in advance how you want to experience the holiday season. Setting your intentions now allows you to shape your holidays thoughtfully rather than reacting in the moment. Visualize how you want to feel throughout the season and after it ends.

Take a moment to reflect and jot down your intentions for the season. Ask yourself:

  • What memories do I want to create this year?

  • What traditions truly matter to me?

  • How can I balance joy and wellness during this season?

Once you’ve set your intentions, consider sharing them with a friend or loved one. Not only does this create accountability, but it also helps set the tone for the season together. By visualizing and planning now, you’ll be better equipped to stay grounded and savor the joy of the holidays.

2. Identify your North Star 🌟

Once you’ve identified the type of holiday season you want, set personal standards that help keep your holiday intentions at the forefront. Think of these standards as your festive “guardrails”, gentle reminders to honor your intention to enjoy the season. They’re not meant to limit you but to support you in navigating celebrations with intention and balance.

Here’s how to create your holiday standards:

  • Identify areas where you need structure (e.g., food, alcohol, social time, or sleep).

  • Think about what aligns with your intentions and what has disrupted your holidays in the past.

  • Phrase your standards positively, focusing on what you’ll do rather than what you’ll avoid.

Example: I will enjoy one festive cocktail early in the evening and switch to sparkling water after 8 PM to support a restful night’s sleep.

For added motivation, consider writing your standards down or keeping them visible in your planner or phone. By staying connected to your wishes, you’ll feel more in control and able to enjoy the season on your terms.

3. Festive Indulgence, not Overindulgence 🎉

Holiday treats and festive drinks can feel like part of the celebration, but not everything is worth the after-effects. Here are two ideas consider before indulging:

  1. Pause and ask yourself, “Is it worth it?” Consider how it might affect your mood, energy, or sleep. For things you know don’t sit well with you, confidently pass—no regrets needed. For the treats you decide are worth it, savor them fully without guilt. And if it turns out something wasn’t worth it after all, use that as helpful information for next time—no judgment.

  2. Use the power of one: One festive drink paired with one glass of water.  One small taste of treats you want to try. One plate and done to prevent mindless grazing.

These small but powerful guidelines let you enjoy the season’s special moments while honoring your body’s needs. By planning ahead, you can celebrate fully without overindulging.

4. Deck the Halls with Health 🍊

Since holiday parties coincide with flu season and changing weather, protecting your immune system is especially important.  Feeling unwell can really put a damper on your holiday spirit, here are a few ways to stay resilient while enjoying the festivities:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Hydration supports your immune system, energy levels, and focus. Be mindful of how much caffeine or alcohol you are consuming.  Consider alternating between festive drinks and water to stay refreshed.  Electrolytes and Vitamin B before you go out can help minimize feeling dehydrated.

  2. Stay Active: Regular exercise balances your immune response, boosts energy, and reduces stress. Keep up with your exercise regime.  Make it a priority or standard to ensure that you don’t end the season starting over.

  3. Consider Immune-Boosting Supplements: Options like quercetin, zinc, vitamin C, and elderberry may help keep your immune system strong. Always consult your healthcare provider to ensure these supplements are right for you.

  4. Mind Your Sugar and Alcohol Intake: While holiday treats are part of the fun, overindulging in sugar and alcohol can weaken immunity. Pair sweet or indulgent items with nourishing foods to maintain balance and energy.

  5. Explore Festive Alternatives: Skip or limit alcohol and sugary drinks with adaptogen-based beverages or festive mocktails.

5. Holiday Harmony 💖

The holidays can often lead to overcommitting, your boundaries are key to navigating the season without feeling drained. Stick to the standards you've set for yourself, whether it's limiting your social engagements or prioritizing your self-care.

  • Its ok to Say “No”: Politely and confidently decline invitations or commitments that don’t align with your priorities. Saying "no" isn’t selfish—it’s a way to honor your time, energy, and well-being.

  • Guard Your Time and Energy: Respecting your boundaries allows you to be present when it matters most and helps you avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  • Don’t Fall Prey to the "Grinches": You have the right to make your own choices, and that includes how you spend your time and what you choose to consume. If others pressure you to drink or stay out late, stay true to your standards and enjoy the season on your terms.

6. Make a Joyful Exit 🚪

Talk with your partner or friends ahead of time about how long you’d like to stay and set an exit strategy. Creating the plan ahead of time rather than after you arrive and are in the throws of the party, can reduce any stress about being there too long or undoing one of your standards.  It also helps with communication when you are ready to go, when everyone your attending with knows the plan.  Stand by your decision to leave when you're ready, say your goodbyes and thank-yous with confidence, knowing that you're making the choice that's right for you.

7. Gift Yourself Grace 🎁

The holiday season is about joy, not perfection. If you slip up or overindulge, remember it's just one moment in time—don’t let it define your season. Give yourself the gift of grace, and start fresh tomorrow. Treat your body with kindness as you recover, knowing that each day is a new opportunity to make choices that align with your intentions.

Navigating the Season with Confidence

This holiday season, remember that it’s about savoring the moments that mean the most to you. By setting clear intentions, personal standards, and self-care routines, you can navigate these weeks with confidence and peace. Embrace this opportunity to focus on what truly matters and create a holiday season that aligns with your well-being and joy.
